Close: Chips Lead as Nasdaq Notches Fifth Straight Gain

Semis carried the tape while energy lagged on softer crude. Breadth narrowed into the bell.

The Nasdaq Composite rose 0.9% Friday, its fifth consecutive advance, as semiconductor names extended their September breakout.

Energy was the weakest sector, with Exxon off 1.6% as WTI slipped below $70. Advancers outpaced decliners only 1.2-to-1 on the NYSE, a sign leadership remains concentrated.

Next week: CPI on Wednesday and the unofficial start of Q3 earnings with the big banks on Friday.
